Advanced ear imaging evaluations play a key role in diagnosing various ear conditions. These tests provide detailed images of the intricate structures within the ear, enabling specialists at Valley ENT to accurately identify and treat underlying issues.
Imaging Evaluation Tests
Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are the most common imaging tests used to diagnose ear conditions. Ultrasound imaging is also used in some cases.
CT Scans
CT scans are especially useful for evaluating the bony structures of the ear, such as the temporal bone, which houses the inner ear. Some Valley ENT locations have on-site low-radiation CT scanners, which can save you time and hassle by having your imaging and doctor’s appointments at the same facility. This imaging technique uses X-rays to create cross-sectional images, allowing doctors to visualize:
Congenital abnormalities: CT scans can detect malformations or developmental defects in ear structures, such as cochlear aplasia (the absence of the cochlea) or incomplete partitions within the inner ear.
Trauma and fractures: Injuries to the temporal bone or other ear structures can be clearly identified using CT scans, aiding in the diagnosis and treatment planning.
Cholesteatoma: This rare, non-cancerous skin growth in the middle ear can be detected and evaluated for potential complications using CT imaging.
Ossicular chain erosion: CT scans can reveal erosion or damage to the 3 tiny bones (ossicles) in the middle ear, which can cause hearing loss.
An ENT doctor spends 4 years at college, 4 years at medical school, and then 5 to 7 years after that in a residency program specializing in otolaryngology — head and neck surgery. Our board-certified ENTs pass written and oral exams and participate in continuous education to maintain their certification. When you visit one of our Arizona locations, you can trust you're seeing one of the most qualified specialists in the region and that your care will be second to none.
MRI Scans
While CT scans excel at visualizing bony structures, an MRI scan is better suited for evaluating soft tissues within and around the ear. MRI uses strong magnetic fields and radio waves to create detailed images, making it useful for diagnosing the following conditions:
Acoustic neuroma: An MRI scan can detect this non-cancerous tumor on the main nerve from the ear to the brain.
Labyrinthitis: MRI can visualize inflammation of the inner ear structures, including the labyrinth (a system of interconnected cavities and canals).
Vascular abnormalities: Physicians can identify abnormalities in the blood vessels near the ear, which can cause pulsatile tinnitus (ringing or buzzing in the ear), with an MRI.
Invasive spread of tumors: MRI is highly effective in detecting the spread of cancerous tumors along the nerves surrounding the ear.
In some cases, CT and MRI may be combined to provide a comprehensive evaluation of the ear structures and surrounding tissues.
Preparing for Ear Imaging Tests
We provide specific instructions to follow before undergoing ear imaging evaluations, which may include avoiding certain medications or removing objects that could interfere with the imaging process. You’ll need to remain still during the tests to ensure clear and accurate images.
Even though imaging tests are valuable diagnostic tools, we may use them in conjunction with other assessments, such as hearing tests, physical examinations, and medical history reviews. By combining these various diagnostic methods, our physicians can develop a comprehensive understanding of your condition and provide the most appropriate treatment plan.
Being prepared will help you get the most out of your appointment. Please bring a list of medications you're currently taking and any pertinent test results—such as labs or imaging—to your appointment. Additionally, let your provider know of any drug allergies or medical conditions you have or for which you are being treated and if you've had any prior surgical procedures.
